La Cuccagna, Monument to Sugar

Balboa Park (December Nights)

2003, Spanish Village entrance

The Sugar Museum collected 10,000 donations of sweets, created this monument to sugar and gave the sweets away over the two night event. Santa Claus sat in the chair for pictures.

Cuccagna refers to the "land of plenty". In the 18th century artists created monuments of food for the people to consume. See more here at the Getty site,

The Sugar Museum's La Cuccagna represents a gift from the "sweets" industry to the people.
